Longing for a European traditional atmosphere for your house? It is never impossible to bring such design to your kitchen. There are endless possibilities with a classic design kitchen in terms of the pattern. Carpenters would normally use Nyatoh solid wood for your kitchen doors to create a classic design. Nyatoh is a reddish tropical hardwood, resembling cherry wood. Among all affordable solid wood, Nyatoh is the most suitable ones for spray painting, the only way to create different colour for your kitchen other than wood colour. However, solid wood is still the most expensive material for cabinetry as compared to plywood, MDF and chipboard. If you need more information on the types of wood used in cabinetry.
There are various designs of the wood grain as well as a number of colour tones. This could be well-achieved by laminating Formica on your cabinet plywood doors or veneered plywood. If you have deeper pockets, you could also opt for timber wood.
Formica is a high-pressured laminated plastic sheet, manufactured from several layers of kraft paper impregnated with melamine thermosetting resin, topped with a decorative layer protected by melamine, then compressed and cured with heat to make a hard, durable surface. It is highly heat-resistant and can be also wiped clean easily. Formica also serves as a water-resistant layer.
There is a wide range of Formica that you can choose from, from a cheaper range to high end.
Modern design is the most popular design in the recent years as more homeowners love high gloss and high shine kitchen cabinets. Modern designed kitchen cabinets will also make your house look more elegant and futuristic. A modern-designed kitchen cabinet is also easier to maintain as compared to a classic one. To create a modern design for your kitchen cabinets, you have multiple options such as high-gloss Formica, spray painting, powder coating (P.U.), acrylic and 3G glass.
High-gloss Formica is one of the cheaper options, provided you choose the cheaper to mid-range Formica. One of the disadvantages of choosing your cabinet doors to be laminated with Formica is that there will be visible lines at every edge of your cabinets if you take a closer look.
3G glass door is a spray glass which is supported by a wood panel/board. In terms of shining effect, it may be slightly better than one of an acrylic material. It is also quite easy to maintain as most stains can be wiped off easily with just a wet cloth with no scratches. However, 3G glass door can be heavier due to the glass material. Though 3G glass could break easier as compared to others, normal activities in the kitchen will not cause the glass to break.
Acrylic is a glass-like plastic, also known as poly (methyl) methacrylate (PMMA). Most acrylic material used for cabinetry is an ‘extruded acrylic’. It is considered to be affordable given its good quality, though it is softer and easier to be scratched as compared to ‘cell cast acrylic’. As compared to a 3G glass door, acrylic doors are half as heavy as glass and will not break. Though acrylic doors can be scratched easily as compared to 3G glass doors, it can be easily buffed out too.
The other method that you can achieve high-gloss or matte colour kitchen cabinets would be through spray painting. One of the main benefits of spray painting will be that there will be no lines at the edge of the cabinets. Another better quality spray painting would be Polyurethane painting, also widely known as P.U. painting. P.U. is a plastic-based resin which provides a flawless and glossy finish when it is used for painting, and higher quality finishes than normal spray painting. It is highly durable, resistant to water and chemicals. Spray painting can only be used on MDF board and solid wood.
Many people confused between modern design and contemporary design and it is used interchangeably. However, contemporary and modern are not synonyms. Contemporary refers to current trends while Modern refers to styles which followed the Industrial Revolution. Though they share the same characteristic of lines and angles, emphasizes on whites, grays, and solids, as well as minimalist, contemporary style is more flexible and encompasses elements of several design styles. Modern design, on the other hand, is fairly distinct and rules-driven.
Other than the kitchen cabinet itself, combination of rounded chair backs, shiny surfaces, distinct colour choices, stacked tile backslash, and dominant rectangular theme can also create a contemporary style. Colours used are normally natural and neutral, with a blend of sharp angles and rounded corners creates perfect contemporary style. Glass backsplash combined wtih unadorned high-gloss surfaces and metallic accents also creates a sleek and ultra-clean contemporary look.
There is no single element or feature that can make your kitchen contemporary. It is simply integrating elements that are not contemporary at all and break all rules. Contemporary is simply just a combination of many design features drawn from the past, while still integrating the best design features of today.
When you think about renovating your kitchen space, kitchen tops are the first things that come to mind. With so many styles and options to choose from, it can be an overwhelming task to determine what best fits your needs. Home décor is pretty similar to fashion. There are those classic styles that never go old, and you have the latest hot trends that will come and go. Usually, the lifetime of kitchen décor lasts for about 10 years, so when you’re remodeling your home and are designing your dream kitchen, you may want to take into consideration the different styles and options that would suit you.
Many kitchen tops out there are usually made of marble or granite. However, there are a few trending kitchen designs in Malaysia that you may want to consider, such as:
Quartz stones are basically engineered stones which are composed of 95% quartz particles and the binders make up the rest of the stone. Once the quartz has been mined, it’s added into an aggregated mix where the quartz crystals are combined with liquid resin as well as colorants into slurry. Quartz stones are widely used to create ergonomic, efficient workstations that cater to the diverse needs and goals of each particular kitchen surface, as well as unique design styles and preferences.
Granite’s vivid natural color palette and near diamond-hard, non-porous surface makes it the ideal material for counter tops. Granite has a crystalline structure which provides the kitchen with a more sophisticated and elegant look and the beauty of the stone can give the most conventional kitchen a little je ne sais quoi. Compared to Quartz stone, Granite stone has gained more popularity among Malaysia’s homeowners though both are natural stones.
Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. The crystalline hard rock is widely used for creating luxury counter tops, pillars or floors. Marble can add beauty and character to a kitchen, and since it’s available in a variety of patterns and colors, you can never get tired of experimenting with various combinations.
Solid Surfaces are generally composed from resins and aluminium trihydrate (ATH). They are typically used in households, office buildings and industry places where the materials can be incorporated as kitchen and bathroom counter top, display and bar settings, and even shelves. Solid Surfaces are available in a wide range of design choices from meteoroid to diamond, jewel to translucent, even pearl-effect – a total of more than 100 varieties.
Stainless Steel is a steel alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium and thus will not rust unlike conventional carbon steel. A Stainless Steel kitchen top has a classy, elegant feel to it while invoking the feelings of being modern and up to date. It is widely used by professional chef as they are anti-bacterial and stain-resistant, while giving a elegant and beautiful glow to the kitchen.
There are some other kitchen counter top options such as laminated table top and the conventional concrete top. Undecided which counter tops to be installed in your kitchen?
